Recreate and Soon, Water Ecology – All in One Place
Welcome to the Headwaters Center, Colorado’s newest non-profit hub for mountain entertainment, events, higher education, and water education.
Our multi-level reclaimed Civil War Era barn, now the Headwaters Center, has 28,000 square feet of possibilities—all with picturesque views of majestic peaks stretching into bright blue skies. Our beautiful surroundings are the inspiration that flows inside and outside the Headwaters Center.
Plan your next special event at our Indoor and Outdoor Event Venues—a perfect setting for private dinners, meetings, and receptions. Bring your family to an outdoor concert or fun community gathering. Wine tastings, art shows, lectures and more. Attend a course in our Higher Minds classroom to expand your skills and point of view.
The fun also spans just beyond our doors. No matter the season, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy biking, hiking, snow shoeing and more along the extensive Fraser River Trail System. All of these adventures (and Headwaters River Journey, opening in 2019–our great indoor center celebrating the great outdoors) are accessible right outside our doors, right here in Winter Park.

Headwaters Center aspires to become a hub for people of all ages and varied interests, for cultural and educational experiences, and to raise awareness about water issues. We look forward to your visit and hope to provide a compelling message about water in the Headwaters Center that will carry over to an experience outside, and connect you with all the area has to offer along the adjacent Fraser River Trail System.
Headwaters River Journey
A Setting Like No Other
We welcome you to Headwaters Center and promise a memorable experience.
Starting with the building itself, our setting offers beautiful, authentic and original space for community and private gatherings, with a loft level dedicated to higher education. Thoughtfully planned, this off-the-grid and sustainable Center is powered by the sun.
Outside, join us for community events such as concerts, wine tastings, farmers’ markets, and festivals, held adjacent to the Fraser River—headwaters of the Colorado River. In tandem with the river and its wetlands, interpretive trails will encourage you to experience the wonders of nature first hand.
Headwaters Center is a Community-Centric Operating Non-Profit Foundation that has event space available for rent by the public or any organization (non-profit or for-profit). Guests using the space may hire any qualified and insured caterer to provide food. Please see our Event Planning Guide and learn about our preferred caterers.
In 2019, when you enter the ground-floor level, you’ll find Headwaters River Journey, which will provide a unique perspective on the importance of conserving our most precious natural resource—water.
Headwaters Center is the Sprout Foundation’s continued commitment to preserving the environment and enriching the community. Headwaters Center is an operating foundation created by the Sprout Foundation.
Our Sustainability Story
Headwaters Center has been designed from the ground up to be an “off the grid” facility that derives all of its power from non-electric grid sources. The facility is powered first and foremost by the sun. Unlike other solar-powered buildings, Headwaters uses and stores all of the solar energy produced in the building, rather than sending it to the grid. Since solar power and batteries use Direct Current, we are distributing Direct Current all the way through the building to power the lights, HVAC equipment, security, audio, and video systems in the building. Staying Direct Current end-to-end on these systems (never converting to Alternating Current) is the most efficient way to distribute power, which highlights the Headwaters Center’s commitment to conservation of energy in all forms.
What about when the sun doesn’t shine?
When solar is not available for days on end (this is Winter Park, Colorado, after all!), Headwaters is powered by natural gas prime power generators. These generators will only run long enough to charge up the battery systems at the facility, and are equipped with pollution and efficiency controls to ensure they operate at their optimal efficiency rating whenever they do have to run. This combination of generators and batteries is significantly less polluting than using power from the electric grid, which primarily derives its energy from burning coal. Although we’d love to operate off of just solar and battery power, using natural gas as a backup generation resource is the cleanest alternative energy resource available today.
